Eberechi Eze Details Arsenal Adjustment After Crystal Palace Move
Eberechi Eze’s move to Arsenal has been one of the Premier League’s biggest stories this season. The dynamic midfielder, who first joined the Gunners as a child before being released at 13, returned in a blockbuster £60 million summer transfer. In a candid interview on the ‘Beast Mode On’ podcast with Adebayo Akinfenwa, Eze opened up about the only real difference he’s noticed between playing for Arsenal and his previous club, Crystal Palace, while reflecting on his journey and the initial shock of the Premier League.
Eberechi Eze’s Journey: From Arsenal Youth to Emirates Star
Eberechi Eze’s path to Arsenal is a remarkable story of perseverance. After being released by Arsenal’s academy, Eze faced rejection at Millwall and uncertainty about his future. However, a successful trial at Queens Park Rangers reignited his career, leading to a key loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers before blossoming at Loftus Road. His performances caught the eye of Crystal Palace, who signed him for £17 million in 2020. Over five seasons, Eze became indispensable at Selhurst Park, culminating in a memorable FA Cup-winning goal last season.
Arsenal, aware of Eze’s talent, moved quickly to sign him this summer. Their £60 million package—including £8 million in add-ons—secured the versatile playmaker, beating rivals Tottenham to his signature in dramatic fashion. The deal was made possible only after Eze himself called Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to clarify his status, prompting swift action from the Arsenal board. Eze now dons the club’s iconic No. 10 shirt, following in the footsteps of legends like Dennis Bergkamp and Mesut Ozil.
The Only Difference: Arsenal’s Spotlight
Speaking exclusively on the podcast, Eze was asked what sets Arsenal apart from Crystal Palace. His answer was crystal clear: “It’s up a level in terms of attention. There’s a lot more surrounding Arsenal than there is surrounding Palace. You have to consider so much more. There’s a lot more eyes on you. You get noticed a bit more.”
While the off-field scrutiny has intensified, Eze noted that the football itself remains familiar. “It’s different off the football pitch, on the pitch it’s the same. Playing the same game, you’re playing to win, you’re having the same types of conversations. Different processes and systems, but still the same principle. But yeah, off the pitch is a big shift and I feel like that’s a natural progression in football as you move club, move upwards. Things start to shift a bit, so this was expected. But it’s something I’m enjoying, I’m trying to handle with grace. So it’s a blessing.”
Premier League ‘Shock’ and Rising to the Challenge
Transitioning from the Championship to the Premier League was a significant leap for Eze, and he doesn’t shy away from admitting the challenge. “Shock. The intensity that you’re playing at and the quality of players. They’re thinking faster, they’re more technically able. So things that maybe took two or three seconds in the Championship are now taking one-and-a-half seconds. You’ve got to be quicker in how you’re processing information.”
He added, “For me, going up, my mind was being stretched—as it is now—moving into a new environment. You’re learning and being put into an uncomfortable state. You’ve got to figure it out, which was good. I felt like I needed that at that time. But of course, as time goes on, you start to acclimatise, feel more comfortable, and then you start being able to be your full self in that environment, which is for me, that’s what I love about football.”
Arsenal’s Ambitions and Eze’s Role
Now at Arsenal, Eze is not just another squad addition. He represents the club’s ambition and commitment to playing a dynamic, attacking style. Mikel Arteta’s project has been defined by signing young, hungry talents, and Eze fits that mould perfectly. Wearing the No. 10 shirt, he is expected to become a central figure in Arsenal’s challenge for silverware this season.
Eze’s growth is evident not just in his technical ability, but in his mental approach. By embracing the increased scrutiny and pressure, he demonstrates the resilience required at one of England’s biggest clubs.
