Axel Disasi has ended his Stamford Bridge exile by completing a deadline-day move to West Ham, bringing a close to the final major exit from Enzo Maresca’s so-called Chelsea “bomb squad”. The French defender has joined the London rivals on loan for the rest of the season in a deal that was pushed through in the closing stages of the window.

The agreement is a straight loan and does not include an option to buy. Reports say West Ham will pay a fee of £1.7 million for the temporary switch, with the move only being finalised after a frantic race against time. Disasi’s medical was reportedly delayed several times on Monday as negotiations over personal terms continued, forcing the Hammers to submit a deal sheet to the Premier League and secure extra time to complete the paperwork after the 11pm deadline.

West Ham strengthen a fragile defence

For West Ham, the signing arrives at a crucial moment. Nuno Espírito Santo had been pressing for defensive reinforcements after his side’s back line was weakened further in the 3-2 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Jean-Clair Todibo was sent off in that match and is now serving a three-match ban, leaving the Hammers short of centre-back options.

With Nuno reportedly having little faith in Max Kilman, West Ham were left searching urgently for a solution. Southampton refused to sanction a move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, which helped steer the club toward Disasi. The former Monaco defender is now expected to provide the physical presence and experience West Ham need, and he is eligible to make his debut against Burnley on Saturday.

The end of Chelsea’s “bomb squad” era

Disasi’s departure is also significant for Chelsea, as it marks the exit of the final senior player widely associated with the club’s controversial “bomb squad”. The term was used for the group of players who were pushed away from first-team training in an effort to force exits during Maresca’s time in charge.

While Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell had already moved on, Disasi remained in limbo after returning from a reasonably successful loan spell at Aston Villa last season. This campaign, he spent the first half of the season training away from the first team and playing for the Under-21s, a situation that became increasingly difficult for a player of his international standing.

The move also relieves Chelsea of a significant wage burden and gives Disasi a chance to restart a career that stalled after his £38 million transfer from Monaco in 2023. Chelsea, meanwhile, have reshaped their defensive options through the BlueCo network, recalling Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg and sending Aaron Anselmino to the French club after his return from Borussia Dortmund.

With the window now closed, West Ham hope Disasi can stabilise their defence quickly, while Chelsea believe they have finally drawn a line under one of the most turbulent squad clear-outs in recent memory.
